As if we needed another reason to visit Chiang Mai, the Flower Festival is an extraordinary three-days event taking place every year on the first weekend of February which has even been featuring as one the best festival in the world!
It is truly a feast for the eyes: a burst of colours and inebriating fragrances and a great occasion to buy exotic orchids and plants while assisting to a wonderful procession of floats decorated with thousands of flowers. Fan of orchids should put this manifestation on their agenda to see the biggest ever variety of this beautiful velvety flower grown by locals and thriving in its natural habitat.
The focus of this Chiang Mai festival is at the public garden of Suan Buak Haad where roads nearby are closed to traffic to let people enjoy the procession of flower-decorated floats. Vendors of plants, flowers, orchids and garden decorations set up their stalls there and the park is a refreshing spot to observe the fountains, have a drink, listen to music and get some rest on the lawn while taking pictures or inhale the powerful flowers scent.
This manifestation is the perfect moment to show off the full blooming of Thailand’s flowers and plants. At 16:00 the Flower Festival Parade starts and moves slowly from Tha Phae Road to Tha Phae Gate with frequent stops along the way. Dancers in traditional costumes and local school bands perform Thai dances, and throw out flowers to the spectators.

Many of the girls on the top of the decorated floats and carriages are candidates for the Miss Chiang Mai Flower Festival competition. The “Queen” is chosen in the evening after a series of dancing and singing performance. This event is an exclusive opportunity to see the beauty of Thailand’s culture and nature all at once!
